2013 MLB Regular Season running thread

If Rivera wore any uniform other than the one he wore, he would be celebrated maybe a quarter of what is going on now.

I agree. You'd never see a player in any other uniform get treated like this all around the league.

BuckW: Thanks for dealing with this issue in the detail it did not deserve, but since it's the Internet, you gotta. I will just say this. In my experience, which was more than a few games, Rivera was the only Yankee I never heard booed at Fenway.
They were too scared/respectful of him.

I really just wanted an excuse to post that Ripken photo.

Speaking of Fenway, what's up with their rocking-chair fetish? :D

(Yes, I understand it's a long tradition in baseball.)

Satchel Paige:

And of course, the best gift Rivera has received so far came from the Minnesota Twins ... a rocking chair made of bats broken (ostensibly) by Rivera:

I'm looking forward to seeing the Fenway reaction when Rivera pitches his last game there. I'm guessing they're going to give him a big sendoff.

According to this page, the pic of Satchel was taken when he pitched for the Miami Marlins in the 1950s: http://wahoosam.com/baseball/hall-of-famer-paige-landed-on-miami-ballfield-via-helicopter/

And later in his career during a game in Boston, he was pictured sitting in a rocking chair between innings -- with a nurse at his side:

The nurse was serving Satchel coffee between innings, per Wikipedia. He was 59 that season, and signed for one game.

I was visiting my grandmother in the rehab facility. Way more important than a baseball game.

Is that an acceptable response you pretentious douchebag?

What's she in rehab for? Marijuana addiction? (crossthread)

CHF, COPD, Pacemaker faltered, leg infections. Anything else you wanna make fun of her for?

Wasn't making fun of her ... just trying for a laugh on you. Meant no disrespect. Sorry.

Was wondering that myself, so I Googled it. Turns out, Dayton's sold out something like 950 consecutive home games, the longest streak in professional sports. Magic Johnson and Archie Griffin are part-owners.

Here's a feature from Cincinnati magazine:

Much like how the University of Dayton sells out every basketball game in its large arena, the Dragons do the same. Lot of civic pride in Dayton. And, I've been told by friends from there, not a lot else to do. But mostly the former.

Anybody else think Satchel could probably be a No. 3 starter right now for the current incarnation of the Miami Marlins?

The A's, with new Home Run Derby king Yoenis Cespedes, are opening the gates an hour earlier on Fridays for the rest of the season so people can watch batting practice. So I guess despite his .225 season average and no home runs since June 21, it won't be Learn To Hit The Curveball Practice.
