Rather than continue hijacking the weather thread on the other board, I wanted to ask this here.

What are some good books, magazines, websites, etc. for someone who is a little bit past the beginning stages on whitewater but by no means an expert? Seems like most of the stuff is geared towards hardcore paddlers with their own gear and plenty of practice inside tricked-out playboats. Or conversely it will be something along the lines of "Here is how to wear a life jacket."

I need to pick up some solid Paddling 201 knowledge, or at least second-semester freshman level, for when I take a float trip in a rented sit on top or pile into a guided raft.

I'm out on whitewater boats, but if anybody has any questions about rec boats or fishing kayaks ... well, that's my life these days.

(Along with fly fishing, backpacking, bicycles and assorted outdoors gear.)

I think I want do do this....

GoPro Awards: Kayaking the Indus River | Paddling.com

River levels low out this way, not a lot of whitewater opportunities. I check some regional resources, I have a book called Paddling Oregon that is terrific. I imagine there are some specific websites/group paddle type communities you could look into. Or check with a local retailer about what they would recommend.

We brought this up in the other thread but:
I'm in the market for a fishing kayak for saltwater that is mobile and can handle the occasional (or regular) scrape with oyster beds. The best fishing is inaccessible by big boat because of the depth. I've seen people run jet skis aground.
I know a 12 footer would be more stable, but a 10 should suit me fine. I'd prefer to be able to stand but don't know how realistic that is. I'm not even against using it just to get where I want to go, getting out and fishing that way.
I mentioned the Moken and took a look at the Native you mentioned. I've also given looks to a Jonny Boat Bass 100 (not as mobile but you can put a legit engine in them as well as paddle).

These are a great way to start kayaking with kids. I got a pink and blue for the g kids and they loved them. Also the older one used it as a stand up. I see they are 89 at the Sams Club. I paid about 100.

"The 6 ft. youth kayak is specifically designed for kids ages 5 and up, or up to 130 lbs."

I've tried the JB Bass 100 without a motor. It was not good. I've gotten pretty blunt with customers about it - don't buy that kayak unless you're adding a motor.

One of the first things I covered after becoming SE at a weekly in the Upper Valley in '03 was Paddle Power, a 2-day benefit for suicide prevention support and awareness outreach. Hundreds of paddlers in the Connecticut River.
