Things Lost to Connectivity

Used to be going to a new city meant buying a guidebook, but that's OK because there was an entire section of the bookstore devoted to travel. Now the travel section is lucky if it gets a shelf to itself at Barnes & Noble.

Speaking of bookstores, you used to find them in these wondrous places called shopping malls. Not only were these malls places to buy all sorts of great stuff, but people would go walking around them while spending practically nothing. It was the day's entertainment! And if you got bored with your local mall, every other month or so you'd make a trip to the big city to go to a bigger mall. The opening of a new regional mall was created with the same sense of awe that a new sports arena might generate. The state DOT would sometimes build a new interstate exit just on the basis of the mall opening there.

Fittingly enough, one of the early Birmingham malls is now an Amazon distribution center. Internet killed the retail star.
Gangs and punk ashed kids ruined malls.

That's one of my favorite parts of my annual trip to London, just taking the Tube to a random spot and walking around the neighborhood, looking for interesting shops, pubs, restaurants, etc. Some are misses, some are hits, but that's the point of adventure, right?
I did this a lot when I first moved to NYC. Just a great way to explore. Especially if funds are limited.

Some. Park City Mall in Lancaster, PA is still bustling at King of Prussia Mall outside of Philadelphia is always packed. I prefer Christmas shopping at malls over ordering online, possibly for nostalgia but whatever.

I did this and was floored by how Wimbledon is essentially in a residential area.

Yeah, took the tour there the first time I went, the bus drops you off right in front. I was surprised at how compact the grounds were, for having 18 courts. Also wanted to play at the golf course right across the street.

Couldn't do any of that because I was there in July of 2012 and everything was locked up security-wise for the Olympics. Cool little at gallery not far from the train station had one of the finest paintings of Times Square I've ever seen.

Is Franklin Mills still open? I used to convince my mom to take me there once a month or so because they had a good comic book store and a Levi's outlet I could buy a good pair of jeans from.
Got several clashic comics from there that are still in my collection.
I think it was briefly the biggest mall in the country until Mall of America opened.
