AMC's The Walking Dead

I didn't think Baptists had crucifixes in their churches? Seems like a pretty major error in the church scene.
Agreed, I was thinking the same thing. The only "Christ on the cross" you see is in Catholic churches. It's part of the guilt they harbor I guess...LOL
The "empty cross" is used in more protestant churches to signify that Christ is risen, which for this show would have worked better...since that means Jesus is a zombie. :)

I actually DVRd the re-run of the episode (the second showing) and there was no commercial until like 28 minutes into the thing. In fact, I thought it might be a commercial-less episode up to that point.

Anyway, a strong start to the season and surprising way to end the episode.
I had the same thing...28 minutes of no commercials, but yeah, after that...it turned into watching an episode of LOST (5 minutes of show, 5 minutes of commericals)

Trying not to post any spoilers, but what was happening in that last scene?

Were they going to let the kid pet the deer? Why are they letting a child walk towards a wild animal that will likely trample or gore him when they have guns in their hands?

Probably because it would not "likely trample or gore him".
This. The thing would have ran away more likely than try to kill him, especially those Georgia deer. They're a bunch of pussies.

Pretty good episode. I wonder if Carl is dead?

Unlikely, knocking off two kids in one episode...nah. That said I think Sophia will be alive as well.

Based on the preview of next week's show he's not dead yet.

I, too, was unclear as to what the deal with the deer was supposed to signify. Maybe it was the "sign" Rick asked for. But as pointed out, a whitetail deer, would have spooked and run as soon as the first twig snapped. All you would have seen is a white flag bounding through the woods.

Yeah, and I'm not sure what's up with the walkers this season. They seem to have a whole lot more cognisance (is that the right word?) than last season.

Well whoever shot Carl is a terrible shot to miss the deer and hit the kid 15 feet away.

The LA Times recap I read said Carl was shot dead. Not kidding. It was also heavily alluded to in the EW interview with Kirkman (I think that was the one).

Did anyone catch the sign in front of the church? I believe it said "Revelation 16:17". If so...

American King James Version
And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.

I think the deer was the sign Rick asked for. This beautiful animal peacefully graces the woods and quietly stands near the humans. It's almost like the deer was seeking solace in them in this crazy forking world. Whether it was the work of God or just coincidence is moot; the point was it was the sign Rick asked for. And then the snap back to the cold, dark reality he lives in was great writing and directing.

I thought the bullet passed through the deer and hit Carl.

And I don't think he dies. The previews show them carrying him and in some kind of a hospital.

See, I took it to mean that Rick and Shane were letting Carl go up to the deer to kill it, a kind of "Hey kid, here's your moment to become a man" type of moment.

Also, I highly doubt he's dead. I think his life or death will play a crucial role in the developments going forward.

But Carl didn't have any weapon with him. How could he have killed a deer three, maybe four, times his size?

No way was the kid thinking about, or wanting to, kill the deer. Seemed more like a brief moment of happiness and wonder, getting that close to a majestic animal and making a connection, in the otherwise horrific living heck their lives have become.
