Smile a lot.
Make eye contact at all times.
Be inquisitive- and be mindful of your own body language.

Confidence.

If you're not a confident person, play one. Not cocky or arrogant, but confident. No one wants to hire a wet napkin.
 
And try not to stare at the sports editor's ass while he can see you doing it.

While some of the openers under sympathetic and confident seem like they'd be catchy, attention grabbing ledes, I also wonder if they'd be enough to turn off perspective SE's.
