Barnicle story on Grantland

But you can still be The Vice President.

Or Secretary of State, unless you believe Hillary Clinton is "dodging sniper fire" in this photo:

Fabrication? Death penalty.

"Forgetting" to attribute a couple of jokes is bad. Making up stories? Done. Career should be over.

Sanctimony from the high priest.
all bow before Azrael.
He hath spoken.
"Done!"

henryhenry, would you be fine with a surgeon who amputated the wrong leg (multiple times) being your surgeon?

Barnicle is a tremendous talent, but as pointed out on TBL, the two cardinal sins of journalism are don't make shirt up and don't plagiarize stuff. Barnicle has done both. Didn't he do both within a month of each other? God only knows how many times he did it before he got caught.

that was in 1998.
14 years.
he ripped off a few jokes from george carlin.
convicted murderers walk in less than 14 years.
plagiarism is not a capital crime.
give the guy a break.
jeez.

Also thought it was safe to channel Royko after Royko had passed.

It's never, ever safe, Mikey. NEVER.

The Salon piece vis a vis Bulger remains an utter delight.

I'd be interested in hearing from you what's changed since the days of Stephen Glass and Jayson Blair.

The issue is credibility.
Is Barnicle credible?
Bill Simmons thinks he is.
MSNBC thinks he is.
For awhile, the NY Daily News used him.
In the 14 years since he left the Globe he has continued to work in journalism. There have been no other incidents. Otherwise, do you think Simmons would have used him? And risked the credibility of Grantland?

But you Azrael - high priest of sanctimony - pronounce him "Done!"

You and the other hard-liners seem to place journalistic sins in a category above mortal sins. In a category beyond repentance or rehabilitation.

Even more weird is that you only put plagiarism and fabrication in this "Done!" category. But when reporters and editors are in financial conflict - if they take tickets, or meals, or gifts - or when they shape their editorial content to please advertisers - you can hardly be bothered. Not on your radar.

If you want to complain about Barnicle because he is a living breathing cliche, or because he's a fossil whose sensibility is dated, that's another thing, be my guest. But spare us the sanctimony.

Those Boston-colored glasses have more than once led Simmons in ill-advised directions.

Yep.

Pretty funny too, how in the liberal world of journalism, the white folks who plagiarize and make stuff up get second chances, and the African-Americans don't. (Barnicle, Doris Kearns Goodwin, etc.)

As for the passage of time, what difference does that make.

In every industry their are "crimes" that get you the "death penalty". And, everyone in the industry knows what they are when they get in.

Would you hire a stock broker who had committed insider trading? A cop who had taken a bribe? A doctor who had several malpractice judgements against him, or had committed MediCare fraud?

Sorry, but Barnicle broke the two rules of journalism. There are only two Cardinal sins, and he broke 'em both. Consistently. Willfully.

Why does he deserve a second chance? Is he that good? Is his opinion that unique? Are there no suitable replacements?

Besides, he's a hack. He's simplistic.

He doesn't.
