Braves ditching The Ted for suburbs

Yeah, I can't think what's wrong with Turner Field to necessitate a move. It's a perfectly good ballpark. And what then becomes of that? Is Atlanta gonna knock down its Olympic stadium 20 years after the games?

Repurpose it for MLS.

The night time traffic in the area around their new place may actually be worse that going through downtown from the northern suburbs. Certainly for anyone coming west on I-285 from Gwinnett or up from the south or even from the southwest on I-285 east. Traffic's a crawl on these roads at evening rush right now, can't imagine what it will be like on a Braves game night.

Definitely the driver behind this was not having the bars/restaurants/shops surrounding the Ted to make it more than just a get in, get out experience. With that said, while there's certainly quite a few restaurants as well as a mall nearby, I'm guessing there's going to be some bars built within the complex. Probably the nearest bar to the area right now would be Doc's, who I believe a few on the board may be familiar with.

Buckets of Dollars

The Braves officials also declined to provide specifics regarding the public funding. "It is through Cobb County, and Cobb County will be responsible for delineating the various buckets of dollars," Schiller said.

It transit's an issue, why not build a station by the ballpark? I can only speak of San Francisco and Oakland, but both are very transit accessible. Even go,ing to a football game at the Murph, er, Qualcom, in San Diego a few years back, the hotel desk told me how to get to the red car station and I avoided all the hassles.

MARTA doesn't run into Cobb County. Never has, and almost certainly never will. Voters have been asked, I believe on multiple occasions, and they have always, always said no. Resoundingly so.

The whole obvious point of this relocation is to put white Braves' fans as far away from non-white Atlantans as is possible. Why do you think Cobb County rejects MARTA? Same thing. The next time somebody from MLB wrings their hands about the lack of African American players, think of the Braves and laugh at them.

Indeed, that's exactly why Cobb rejects MARTA. But putting that stadium where they intend to put it is a disaster waiting to happen. I cannot conceive of a circumstance under which anyone from Gwinnett will even want to try to get there. Might as well just go see the Gwinnett Braves.

Why would the proposed location be any worse for Gwinnett-ians than the current location?

Spoken like a good Bostonian.

SMH.

Meanwhile, as was noted a while back...the Braves have one of the worst TV contracts in baseball, thanks to Liberty's deal with TW when it bought the team. As a result, the best way to grow revenue is to use Cobb County taxpayers' money to build a stadium that the Braves control. Ka-ching.

I think at least some of this is being driven by the Brave's school girl envy over the Falcon's getting a 20 year old stadium replaced. One possible problem. Where is the money going to come from? I don't think the Braves are going to want to pay for the whole thing. And I have problems seeing a Georgia Republican advocating casino gambling or some other sin tax given the influence of the religious right.

Cobb County Government is paying a big chunk, according to the stories.
