My grandmother gave me a Veg-O-Matic long ago and it was actually a very handy kitchen gadget. We used it for years to make fries, chop onions and slice various vegetables.

I would watch the infomercials for the Showtime rotisserie grill when I was a young teenager and be transfixed - to the point that my parents joked that it was my favorite television show, except that it worked, and they bought one. And, they *still* have it and use it regularly - It's the perfect size for a turkey, beef roast or ham, and you can also use the spit or the basket to roast veggies.

Can't remember if it was that Gladwell piece or another one, but part of Popeil's success was that he was like an anti-magician. He did the demo on the grill, and it looked so god damn easy, like there couldn't possibly be a trick to it. Ultimately, it's just a mini-oven, but he also realized the gap in the market, since prior to that setting up a spit on your grill or conventional oven was a pain in the ass.

As a Chicago boy I remember those Veg-O-Matic ads back in the 1960s when Popeil was starting out. The one Popeil catchphrase I haven't seen yet is "Isn't that amazing!"
