Dave Chappelle’s “The Closer”

To paraphrase, you can make fun of a black man's lips, but you better not hurt a gay person's feelings.

That's why Dave's pissed, and jealous ... jealous way more than pissed ... and the pain in his message is intentionally blurred between the lines.

But you have to admit, the public by and large did not exactly rise up to defend DeMaurice Smith's honor.

No real answer for that one other than hey, DeMaurice got to keep his gig and that's worth something.

But you have to admit, the public by and large did not exactly rise up to defend DeMaurice Smith's honor. If anything, that email was dismissed pretty readily as "something someone said a decade ago in a private conversation."

When the rest got leaked, that's when the sporting public decided he had to go. To paraphrase, you can make fun of a black man's lips, but you better not hurt a gay person's feelings.
Eh, I think that was more of an issue of quantity. If they had released like, five racist statements that Gruden made, instead of a couple racist and a couple sexist, he's still gone. Whenever there is just one (1) thing out there, there is a segment of apologists who act like that's the only time said person ever said such a thing.

One of the articles I linked above mentions something like a "hierarchy of pain" that Chappelle seems to have, and I thought that described it pretty well.

Dave Chappelle may have a hierarchy of pain but his net worth is well north of $50M so I can only assume much of his anger is an act.

I mean, he literally walked away from $50M (all the way to Africa) because of his pain and anger.

He also very recently literally begged his fans to boycott Netflix, his major benefactor, so that he could make a point about money he deserved.

I ask this genuinely… have you watched his comedy shows?

BTW, after this latest special, which has received such a backlash, I'm finding myself asking the same questions repeatedly to people who bash it* — "Have you watched "The Closer" in its entirety?" and "Have you seen Dave Chappelle perform before?"

*Typically they bash Chappelle with no particular critique of the show itself.

I've watched and enjoyed every minute of his specials. The story about his opening act that he ends The Closer with is heart-wrenching, and proves to me Dave is not a misogynist, gay-bashing, evil man.
He's also not a saint. He's a comedian who has generational wealth in the bank, regardless of how much money he's walked away from.
Again, I repeat, he's a comedian. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm on "Team Chappelle" and he makes me laugh.

Watched it all the way through. Kind of reminded me of Hannah Gadsby's Nanette in some ways. It made me think.

He's a comedian when the joke doesn't hit. But when he's making social commentary during his performance or because of his stature and rhetorical gifts, he's to be taken seriously?
