Design thread .... v.2

Good point, Willie-Butch. Originally I used the hammer "State Champs!" as a place holder, to see what a 120-pt (or bigger) headline would look like. I intended to change it when I came up with something more clever, but when it was all said and done I felt like that summed it up the best. In retrospect, I think you're totally right. Just not sure which one I would change (hammer or subhead) if I had to do it over again.

Thanks for the input, guys. Hope to hear some more feedback from the night crew!

I'll echo the above posters - overall that's a really great section. really nice photos. I'm a big fan of the "By the Numbers" info as well... everybody does it, and often, but I think its an effective way to add something extra to a layout.

Nothing? Nada? :-\

Sorry, Doc. Just got back from the minor league baseball game with the kid. Lemme get her to bed and I'll rip it to shreds for ya ;)

They're clean and attractive, Doc. I think the reason you haven't heard anything is because the only things to add are either nit-picky or personal preferences.

For instance, I'm not sure how I feel about the blue Bridge box, or the cutout being at the bottom. It works, though. When I consider how I would have done it differently I don't know that it would be a vast improvement.

Everything's fine on the All-Star Team front, I would have just preferred a bit more white space in that package but it wouldn't have been easy to do without moving a bunch of stuff around.

Hope that helps.

Actually, the nice thing is it wasn't a cutout. I just clone-stamped some more of the background on the top of the photo.

But I guess you saying there wasn't anything to rip was the best compliment you could have given. :)

Ohhhhh. I gotcha.

My only nitpick is the thick frame on the oval shaped CP, I think its a striking package and the thick rule distracts from it when the screen by itself does the job of framing the package I think. Other than that, looks good.

Here's a couple from my new paper. Let me just add that I had Quark so much I would murder it if it were a living entity. Also, the hed in the Dale Jr. CP has a hyphen, but it got lost in the conversion from an EPS to a JPG.

I like your package, err, the package on the baseball player. Overall, it's clean and easy to navigate. The only issue I have on the Jr. package is that there's a lot of copy on the front. Maybe a pull-quote, or a smaller photo on the bottom-left portion of the copy on front. But you've got a nice eye for layout.

First, the pull quote in the top story is way too large for that news hole.

Second, why use a cutout of LeBron? It seems kind of pointless. Wouldn't that space had been better used for a breakout of some sort?
