Eighteen former DMN employees who were laid off in the wake of the 2004 circulation scandal have filed an age-discrimination lawsuit against the DMN and Belo Corp. in federal court.

Most of them are former writers and editors, and all are over the age of 40.

Watch this one carefully... if a court rules against Belo in this, things could get pretty interesting. (obviousremarkfontturnedoff)

40 years old and older! How can they even manage to write a story with those cataract-filled eyes and arthritic fingers?

Mmmmm...might explain why Belo's Providence Journal pulled a 180 Sunday and endorsed the referendum which would change the state constitution to allow Harrah's to build a casino in Rhode Island. Harrah's has showed the ProJo PLENTY of advertising money this autumn.

Just the rumors about this suit eventually being filed have affected other papers. At the very end of the Herald's buyout/layoff process in '05, one poor young woman in news was laid off solely to be the only person under 45 let go by the paper.
