The TV interview with the owner was unreal.

TV guy: "What do you have to say to all the fans out there?"

Owner: "If you know of someone who's interested in buying a team ..."

Talk about your trainwrecks. I'm sure everyone in Atlanta just has a friend with hundreds of millions of dollars stashed away in their mattress.

How about the owner try ... "I'm sorry to put everyone through this, and I hope they continue to support us while we're going through this difficult time."

That could be the dumbest thing that Levenson has said this month. Maybe. What a frickin' tool.

This will serve as the poster child for why 9 man ownership groups won't work.

And with the bumbling the Spirit Group did over the entire course of the run here, you wonder in amazement how any of these guys made any money in the first place to buy the team.

No way Waddell continues on in a new location. The only reason he's still here and was GM for so long is the ownership group was ignorant about hockey.

Christ. 11 years of hockey down the drain. 1 playoff appearance. 0 playoff wins (swept by the Rangers. Atlanta could support a team if it showed any hint of promise,

I would imagine the Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL is eagerly anticipating the move, where they stand to pick up a boatload of new attendees next year.

Thanks for attempting to get the subject back on track.

Enough of the friggin Queen shirt. We know the connection. OK?

I'll assume this is directed at me.

No need to be a crabby pants.

I was in the arena. She made an impression.

Anyway, if you look through this thread you'll see I contribute. And not just under this handle.

Have a nice day.

Then my apologies.

This ongoing relocation saga is old and tired.

I feel bad for the city of Winnipeg, truth be told. They end up getting used. Through corporate charity they may be a viable landing spot, but there is at least one study mentioned in an article I've read suggesting significant challenges. I'll see if I can find it and link it.

I've made my position clear and respect those on the other side like Double J.

And back to the Queen, the version I saw was the first. I didn't know there were two until today.

Here's the article. Worth a read:

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/glendale-shelves-bond-offering-121305399.html

Winnipeg has made significant gains in the 15 years since the Winnipeg Jets left town for the Arizona desert but the city still faces some significant challenges if the NHL is going to return and be profitable in the long run.

A new study from the Conference Board of Canada, a national think-tank, found Winnipeg and Quebec City have higher populations and more per capita disposable income than they did in 1996. A league-wide salary cap and a loonie trading above par with the U.S. greenback are two other major developments in the cities' favour, the study says.

But the board said whether the overall conditions are sufficient to support the rebirth of an NHL franchise in Winnipeg is "debatable," in part due to the presence of the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Former Jet Jim Kyte:

Jim Kyte, chair of the marketing and management studies department at the Algonquin College School of Business in Ottawa and a former Winnipeg Jet, said he's not worried about the city supporting a team in the first five years. It's later that worries him.

"Will the team still be able to draw the fans? Almost half of the teams don't make the playoffs so you have to have a well-managed team and run a lean organization," said Kite, who consulted on the report.

Kite said the potential ownership tandem of the Chipman family and Canada's richest man, David Thomson, would be a "match made in heaven."

Might as well link this, too. Forbes 2010 team valuations. Click on an individual team for team specific information. Quite a dropoff in operating income after the top three:

The Wild have lost money for the last two years I believe. Product on the ice has finally caught up with them.

It's Manitoba's turn to shell out cash for a team. True North wants the province to bail them out from MTS Centre debt. If the future owners can't fund the team now, how will it succeed in a small market?

It won't, it will just lose far less than the other markets. Truth is there aren't 30 NHL markets, at best Winnipeg breaks even, at best

Are there 21 markets back in the good ol' days before the Sharks?

IN my idiotic opinion if you throw in the 2nd team in the GTA there are about 24 markets that can support themselves.

The best market to me would be to put a second team in Toronto. LA can have two teams and NYC area three, but not Toronto?

Realistically, I know the powers that be at MLSE are never going to allow that to happen.
