Apparently I got in some kind of feud in 2006 with rat fink (who?) when I besmirched the honor of the Cartersville (Ga.) Daily Tribune. Hate it that I didn't save my replies then. Such riveting stuff!

OK, that was interesting and not what I thought would be there.

I started here in early 2009 (after all the Obama election fireworks) and it was primarily for the jobs board, as I was looking to move from the Midwest to the Northwest. It eventually happened in summer 2009, and I haven't looked back.

So anyway, just about all my early DMs were about job offers -- either ones I was seeking or others asking me about the Quad-Cities job openings.

I had forgotten that UP Chip and I connected way back then as former Yoopers (although I only worked up there for a few years).

There was also this interesting advice/commentary from April 2009 about moving to western Montana (a few details omitted to protect the poster's identity):

I also used to work at that MT paper.

In 2014, the day after I retired, ending my 44-year newspaper career, I posted a recap of my time in the business. It was quite lengthy. The next post was a shot at me by VERSATILE about the long post and who cares. I said nobody made him read it.
Then I got a PM from AMY, who said she wanted to slap Versatile silly. She congratulated me on my career. That was nice.

Versatile and I exchanged a ton of PMs, but one time in particular, he sent me one titled "I live to derail your threads," in which he merely noted that his longest and most demented posts were usually at my expense.

I still have a copy of the five-act play he posted making fun of me on my second anniversary on this board, and still laugh even though it's been more than a decade and most of the posters referenced therein are long gone.

Versatile was definitely an acquired taste, but he was also had that type of weird dysfunctional genius one could only find here back then. I miss him.

Mine dates to April, 2006, Double J and I discussing the late, great Dixie Beehives Jr. B hockey team. A bunch followed that summer regarding the Toronto outing from those who made it and missed it.

My first DM was to Moddy about a guy he might have known. I misspelled his name and got details about his bio wrong. Moddy was nice in responding and kind in correcting me.

The rest of the DMs are invites to another board.

Fun idea. I have very few DMs. Been around these parts since 2003, but mostly lurked for several years. Mostly job DMs for me.

Most recent was asking to visit the board of the damned.

Yeah, Versatile was cool, and so was Tom Petty once you got to know him. Which took some effort: He could rip into other posters like few others, but we had some long DM conversations that really showed the better side of him.

I've always missed both those guys. And SF_Express most of all. His DM conversations were always the best.

I have many early DMs from IJAG, we set up a blind date between journos we knew and they've been together for 15 years. So this place does have a little magic sometimes.

I found some DMs from IJAG when I was looking for a career change. She had a friend who worked in my prospective career and offered to forward any questions I had to her friend. She was as good as her word and forwarded back the answers from her friend.

Turned out that I did decide to go back to school for that career change and, after a lot more years afterward in newspapers, now I'm in a kinda, sorta version of that prospective career and enjoying it immensely. So I can credit IJAG and her friend with an assist more than a decade later.

Most of my DMs are people asking questions about vacationing on our around my island slice of heaven or exchanges with people whom I've chewed common dirt.
Two topics I'm always eager to discuss.

I want to clarify that Versatile was one of my favorite posters and am still sorry we never managed to meet IRL. I'm not a fan of gratuitous meanness, even from those I like.

My first DM was from Johnny Dangerously. I was guessing Moddy or Frank Ridgeway. Topic of all my early DMs is easily guessed by all who know how I ended up here.
