Maybe, maybe, one of them was funny and/or interesting on its own merit. And maybe an additional two were funny if I attached my own lewd version of their story.

That's sad.

Legacy comics, baby. I'd be willing to wager that at least half of the strips in your paper are no longer penned by their original artist, but they remain in all their mediocre-by-today's-standards glory. Finding a parcel of space on the funny pages amidst the Blondies and Dennis the Menaces and Hagar the Horribles is tantamount to getting a rent-controlled apartment in Manhattan.
 
The ability for comics artists to self-publish on the web has proven what a joke syndicated comics are. There's a ton of good stuff out there. Great, even. But you won't find it in the newspaper.
