Gordon Hayward, Players Tribune and a scoop

No, I get why they would want to have a Tribune story. I don't get why that's how the news has to be broken. You're going to tell your new organization, "I'm very excited to be with your team, but if you can wait till my Players Tribune piece comes out..."?

As a side note: Are the athletes being paid here? Anybody know how much?

The teams probably feel the same way, and are thankful they have an avenue to bypass traditional media.

Athletes aren't paid, but have final approval on their content, as far as I know.

I just like picturing Jeter in the Players Tribune Office. It's near the end of the day, he's running off to a party, decked out in a tux. Hayward and the ghostwriter sit nearby on their desks, anxious for Jetes' verdict.

Finally, after a brief anecdote about A-Rod, he walks over to them with the printout and says, "Run that baby."

Seriously, though, if I'm Danny Ainge, I kind of want to make this announcement. After getting nailed for not doing anything, you'd want to announce when you did do something, no?

Jetes, yet again, is making out like a forking bandit.

I always assumed it was mostly agent-driven. Maybe agents get a kickback? I'm sure Players Tribune is promising them they'll come off looking great but it's not like ESPN or SI or other places couldn't do the same.

SI has done the same.

"I'm coming home."

Is ESPN holding Woj back? I mean that more in general than in this specific case, when it was clearly done to pacify a source. But Shams Charania has been running circles around him all week.

Not sure why ESPN would want him out there walking back a ESPN story.

But, hey, he made it big time by working with the agents. I don't think it's the way it should be done, but people read it and he made a lot of money and friends doing it so...

The NBA portion of Twitter has been enthralled with the Shams vs. Woj debate this summer. The memes and tweets have been exceptional. I've never seen anything like it.

A sampling, for y'all:

I thought ESPN bought The Vertical when Woj joined ESPN. Doesn't that mean Shams goes with him? Still teammates or now opponents?

Also, find it interesting just when an agent's name gets used and his quote is attributed properly, vs. all those anonymous usages that have turned reporting into such a sewer.
