How to ask for freelance compensation

I e-mailed him and haven't heard from him for a while. He used to get back to me quickly, which is why I've noted this delay in e-mail response from a magazine editor. Should I be concerned and call sometime tomorrow morning (tomorrow a.m. EST = 5 hours ahead GMT), or should I wait it out? I leave for college on August 27, so is there any way I could receive the 25 pounds before then?

Never say never, but if you turned the invoice in today, I wouldn't expect before mid-September.

Just to reiterate. You don't "ask" for freelance pay. You negotiate it up front.

It's amazing how many writers will agree to do something without asking how much it pays, though.

Even now, he shouldn't ask for payment.

Send them an invoice with an amount that you think is fair.

Or send an email asking when you can expect payment for the article.

Obviously, not the most ideal way, but he can still expect to be paid for this.

fork that. Not if he didn't negotiate it beforehand.
As others had said, negotiate up front, but don't send an invoice unsolicited -- at least, not if you ever want to suck on that teat again.

If no fee was discussed up front, he's likely screwed
