I think the consensus is that people shouldn't do stuff just to get their names in the paper.

And I get a kick out of parents who claim their kids, who probably haven't opened a damn newspaper since they have been born, were "upset" about a write-up.
Good one.
I also loved being told that I screwed up some kid's scrapbook by not putting him the headline/photo/lede/in the agate when he/she finished 30th in an event.
That's a very good question I often ask myself here where it seems like EVERY parent has a scrap book they're keeping. What gets me is when parents get upset at me when my stats aren't in line with the other paper's stats, no matter if mine are the actual ones or not.Bob Slydell said:playthrough said:zagoshe said:Bob Loblaw Law Blog said:Her daughter sounds like a whiny bench. And why would you want a scrapbook of something you obviously suck at anyway?

Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I seem to remember a time when athletes played sports because they liked to play sports.
But I'm going to accept my new responsibility, and I vow to take it seriously. Because it appears that without us, there would be no use for high school sports.

DanOregon said:heck, just offer the Mom a chance to guarantee coverage _ "pay for play" if you know what I mean. Pretty soon parents will be covering the high school beat anyway with "user-generated content"
What we have to look forward to:
"My daughter finished third in the 400, but did so with a PB of 1:09.21. The other two girls, Jane and Cindy, finished first and second, respectively...."

I tell them, 'You wanna get some ink, well, I got a kid and he needs some diapers.' $20 gets you a graph, $40 gets you two graphs. But if you want in the lede or headline, mommy better be close by with the checkbook. For $150, I'll get your mediocre-at-best son/daughter on the front cover ...
