I echo OP's thoughts on this. We've all either seen or experienced firsthand how so many publishers in this business treat their employees and papers by whacking the heck out of them. This guy is doing the opposite, so I applaud him for that. I hope like heck it works out and that others start following his lead.
BTW, the winter 2012 AJR had a story about this as well. Not sure if that's what led to the AP story or not.
