Final print edition of Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times and Mobile's Press-Register.

They could have used the final editions to reflect on the paper's rich history; instead it's just a pamphlet advertising AL.com.

Do they have a lot of people left who could have reflected "on the paper's rich history?" How about some?

When did the rich history end? Was it this month?

One of these days, someone needs to go around the country and do a photo series showing the abandoned printing press buildings and newsrooms all these withering newspapers are leaving behind likes a snake's shedded skin.

I can quickly think of about a dozen in places I've worked and lived.

Unfortunately you now add Birmingham to the list.

No, not a lot. Some, perhaps, and only a few with institutional knowledge of 30-40+ years ago.

It ended more than a decade ago.

They would love visiting the site of my old place: The old Santa Monica Evening Outlook is now the Santa Monica Brewing Company. If we had a brewery in our building when I worked there, I'd have been a 24/7/365 employee.

You wouldn't have anything to show in Harrisburg. It's completely leveled now, and is the view when I go into my current office once a week and park on the fifth floor of our garage.

I suspect my old paper will take this path sooner rather than later.
Print circulation is down 73% since I left a decade ago. They recently stopped carrier delivery. It's all mail.
Their deadline on Friday night for Saturday's paper is 8 p.m.
This week was a federal holiday, meaning no paper on Monday. So, anything that happened Friday night or after didn't get into the hands of print delivery subscribers until Tuesday afternoon.
I think their first step will be to drop the pretense of being a daily paper, call itself a bi-weekly or something, and finally kill print.

Two of my old shops are doing that right now. I'm old enough to have yelled "stop the press!" when I caught a headline bust. Those were the days.
