Ever heard of Pete Frame? He's a British journalist and rock historian who created hundreds of "family trees" charting rock history. I first discovered his work in a rock encyclopedia I bought in Waldenbooks circa 1990 and have been fascinated ever since. Here's a sample of his work

That very same tree was in the liner notes of the Rainbow greatest hits CD that I purchased in the '90s. Poring over that chart was quite the added bonus.
