Absolutely a legend. The show seemed to book too many celebrities once they moved to NY, but you would actually learn about stuff on his show. His audiences were pretty bright too. RIP.

I think the last Donahue I saw was late 1992 when Neil Diamond was on plugging a Christmas album.

Donahue was 56 or so at the time. He looked 70. Always looked older than he was.

What's sad is you will see a lot of hosts on daytime talk (the ones that are still airing live shows and not on summer break) talk about what a trailblazer he was - and then go on with their inane chit-chat - There is nobody even close to doing what he did back in the day. Clarkson? Ripa? The View? Maury? Springer? Dr. Phil?

Same here. He had such a wide variety of guests and topics.

He had at least two shows devoted to pro wrestling; one of which infamously had on Vince McMahon and a host of others and dealt with their steroid and sexual assault scandals. Another one hosted the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.

One of the last ones I remember watching was when he got Amy Fisher and Joey Buttafuoco on his show during their scandal.

One of his more important episodes, which I can't find online right now, was when he had on Ryan White talking about having AIDS. The studio audience was made up entirely of kids, asking all sorts of questions. I'm sure a lot of schools showed that episode in classrooms for a few years.
