I remember watching their show as a kid. They were fun even if the schtick was predictable. I'm certain I missed most of the drug references at age 12 or so. OTOH, I first saw The Who on their show, and it was a helluva introduction. Keith Moon got a little over enthusiastic with the finale. This show was a root cause of Townsend's deafness, even more than playing at jet engine decibels live.
If you have never seen this, by all means give it a watch. Clashic Who. The opening clip in "The Kids Are Alright" doc on The Who, another film well worth watching for certain, lots of rare clips included.
Rest.
And writers for the show included Steve Martin, Rob Reiner,That was a great show. Pat Paulsen, Leigh French, lot of political shots at the establishment.
I distinctly remember seeing the Turtles performing "Happy Together" one Sunday night, watching from a Holiday Inn in Georgia while en route to Florida on our annual spring break migration with about seven other families.
They were also excellent musicians with legit folk-singing chops.
This is a an incredible way to start that movie. I believe Dave Marsh's book about The Who, Before I Get Old, mentioned that Moon bribed a stage hand with booze to get him to set a charge in his drums. Apparently a flying cymbal nearly decapitated Roger Daltrey.
