Alright folks, met a girl last night at the bar. She was genuinely interested and initiated contact. Now I have the phone number, but really don't know what the protocol is for when to call.

If I call too early, I reek of desperateness, If I call to late, I seem like I'm not interested.

Typically, I don't get numbers in the bar; partially because I heard its bad form, and partially because my last girlfriend was/is an alcoholic and I don't feel like going through that again.

So what would each of you guys do in this case? I'd like to know so I don't screw it up.

(This is one of these days that I am glad I am part of a message board community)

Pass a note to her best friend during geometry class.

Call when you feel like calling. Games are stupid, and I'm sure she's not looking to play them with you -- otherwise she wouldn't have given you her number.

Despite their recent dating histories, I'm much more likely to side with mike over rumple on this issue.

The night I met my wife, she asked me out. To an opera, but I had to work that night (thank God). I said I couldn't but we could have dinner together some other time. I called her the next day. She'd already indicated interest and I saw no reason to play games. I hate games. Turns out she does, too.

Before you call, make sure the number isn't that of her local Chinese takeout place.

No need to get all excited, only to have someone pick up and yell, "Wang's Great Wall, how can I help you?"

I avoid this by asking for the number, then plugging it into the phone and calling her so she then has my number. When she pulls the ringing phone out of the purse, I'm sold that she didn't just make up some number.

Coming across as desperate is a function of what you say and how you say it, not calling "too soon".

Coming across as having forgotten that you met her until after you got shot down by someone else, however, is a function of waiting too long. The definition of too long is going to vary with the woman.
