stephen hawking: the afterlife does not exist

Can I make fun of Kirk Cameron?

Well ... well ... well ... then why are there still monkeys? Ha! Suck it, eggheads. Pwned!

If Kirk Cameron is the spokesman for heaven's existence, then Alan Thicke must be the Father. See what I did there?

She played "Heaven Isn't Happening", she played "Heaven Is a Truck"
She said Heavenly was cool, I think they were from Oxford
I only had one single, it was a song about a pure and simple love
There's a girl on Heaven Hill, I come up to her cabin still
She said Hüsker Dü got huge, but they started in St. Paul
"Do you remember?" makes no sense at all
And heaven is the whole of the heart and paradise is by the dashboard light
Utopia's a band, they sang "Love Is the Answer," and I think they're probably right,
Let it shine down on us all, let it warm us from within

He wasn't just the drummer, he was the singer's younger brother
I still spin that single, but it don't sound that simple
Let it shine down on us all, let it warm us from within
He wasn't just the drummer, he was someone's little brother
I still spin that single, but it don't sound that simple anymore

Heaven is whenever we can get together
Sit down on your floor, and listen to your records
Heaven is whenever we can get together
Lock your bedroom door, and listen to your records

Heaven is whenever we can get together
Heaven is whenever

Is it me, or are we discussing just one belief system's view of the afterlife? If it's possible that there is an afterlife, why does it have to be your version? If it's possible that the Christian view of the afterlife is right, isn't it equally possible that some other religion's view of the afterlife is right? What about reincarnation?

I know that faith requires believing that you're right. But unless God's a whole lot more fungible than we think he is, at least someone -- a whole lot of someones, in fact -- is wrong. Be a heck of a thing to find that you were right about there being an afterlife, but wrong about which one, wouldn't it?

I was just rereading this thread and thought about this. What if there is a god, and that god has enough of a sense of humor to make the afterlife into whatever you believed it was going to be while you were alive.

If you believe there is none, you go right to nothingness when you die. If you believe the Heaven/heck thing, of you go to there (I wonder if everyone gets sent to heck no matter how they lived, just for shirts and giggles?). If you believe in 72 virgins, so what if you killed 3,000 people. 72 virgins, coming up. I think maybe it is in my best interests to believe in an afterlife and to make it one heck of a place (pun intended).

I think it's odd how angry people get when someone like Hawking comes out and makes a statement like this. It's like, cue up the "egghead" and "ivory tower" putdowns. And, of course, lots and lots and lots of snide talk about "theories" (quotation marks absolutely necessary).

Theory is not fact and is falsifiable.

I'm not sure what I can add to this except personal experience.

I've struggled with the concept of religion much of my life. I've gone through things I'd never wish on others. I've made decisions I'm ashamed of. I've also done many good things and made decisions I'm proud of. I've also been back and forth on whether I believe or not.

I don't know for certain if there is a god or an afterlife, but I do believe it to be so. The reason I believe is because when I turn through prayer to God and trust in Him I am at peace with myself. When I am at peace with myself, I am more productive, more confident, and things seem to go my way — or at least I let the bad things roll off my back a lot smoother. Maybe it's all coincidence. Maybe I'm a fool. But I'm at peace with myself and I know why, so even if I end up being worm food and nothing more, I'm OK with that.

And if anyone else chooses not to believe, I'm not going to preach to you or call you names or anything like that. I'm going to respectfully disagree and go about my business, hoping that you can find the inner peace that I have found.

If you can't make fun of Kirk Cameron, then heck really is on Earth.

If there is an afterlife, Kirk Cameron is going to have to answer for having Julie McCullough fired from the show for posing for Playboy. Wait till he gets up there and finds out that heaven is a nudist colony.

All praise to Khartoum:

That smile, show me.
Another minute crying?
Waste! End nowhere near.

Each other, we've got.
Right in our hands, the world spins.
Lucky dreamers, we.

We keep on giving,
Babe, rain or shine, all the time.
Sharing laughter, love.
