Walter, most of us started part-time somewhere. For me it was stringing high school games for a metro while I was in university.
Lots of good people out there freelancing, too. I didn't put my freelance gigs on my resume, because my resume was already crowded enough without them. But if were not, I wouldn't have hesitated to do so. Work is work, writing is writing, whether its 10 hours per week or 50.
I can't be an expert on JBondurant's situation, but if it were me, 30+ hours per week at a 100,000 circ. metro would be a lot better than 45 hours per week in Podunk. Probably pays better, too (just a guess).
