How did he not have a return flight when he booked the trip originally?Yes, he was able to catch a flight back home, with assistance from his new corporate overlords.

He did. But then he didn't have to cover the game so tried to reschedule. As far as I know, he got back early Wed afternoonHow did he not have a return flight when he booked the trip originally?
... I will say that the guilt those folks making that move are feeling, while unnecessary, is real.

I am FB friends with one of the aforementioned writers (not Fennelly LOL) and I can attest. Feel a little bad for the guy, actually.A lot of survivor guilt going on there, I can assure you, having been in a similar position a few years back.
I wondered about the WARN act when this all went down the other day. Just figured they found a way around it.
So glad you finally have an opportunity to read him now. FYI, he wrote essentially the same column for the Trib 3 months ago. If you had any self-awareness you might realize how your posts come across, but I doubt you care.
It is crystal clear now, and probably should have been from the start, that Revolution had no intention other than to sell that prime real estate and make as much money as it could until it could sell out. Disgusting how it treated so many people. Those laid off in the past few years got two weeks severance, regardless of service time. Unconscionable.Just to make it all more interesting, and maybe a tad more complex, it appears Times Publishing (and not Tampa Media Group) sent a letter to state officials on May 3, the day it took over. The Tampa Bay Business Journal has a story about that, for those who might care.

Yes, I realize this story is now becoming increasingly arcane for the majority of SJ.commers, but I suppose sharing this stuff is part of my grieving process for my alma mater. I've actually been gone from the Tribune (16 years) now longer than I was there (15 years), but my hometown paper still felt like home. In the back of my mind, I always figured I could go back there if my career outside the business ever cratered. I even met my future wife there, and we were both veterans of the Last Great Newspaper War, so the place was particularly meaningful to me.
Is the Times hiring anyone else from any portion of the Tribune such as the printing plant, etc.?Just got word that the Times has hired former Tribune sports columnist Martin Fennelly. An email went to staffers earlier today.
A good — and logical — hire, if you ask me.
I'm aware of only two other hires, both from news: the military affairs reporter who absolutely kicked the Times' ass on coverage of MacDill Air Force Base (home of Central Command), and a general assignment reporter who covered Ybor City and Tampa's heritage.
I expect we might hear about others over the weekend. The Times is producing a special section about the Tribune's legacy, and it's possible they'll announce that "some of your favorite reporters are joining us!" or somesuch happy-happy spin. (I do know I'm quoted in one of the stories. It's always odd whenever I'm quoted in print, at least to me, but not nearly as weird as being quoted by the newspaper that was once the mortal enemy.)
