You're right. I do find them great when covering high school football in the state of Texas. Do a book called "The Year In Twitter." Keep track of all the stupid tweets and all the "news flash" Tweets that turn out to be complete Bullspit. (Like recently someone Tweeting the Georgia QB had broken his ankle in 2 places; turns out it was sprained.)
