The iPad, for instance ... I have one (issued by my workplace), and I still really can't see the benefit as yet. Yes, it's nice to read e-books, but it's not orders of magnitude better than reading a book (the way that browsing agate, for instance, is orders of magnitude better on a screen than on paper. Sorry, agate guys.)
I'm far, far from being a luddite, but I don't understand how a holographic display will enhance my life or make things easier or be anything other than "cool, check that out."

has TONS of possibilities. If this link could also serve as a diagnostic device to tell me when something in my home is about to go wrong or isn't working properly, now WE'RE on to something. Imagine that your air conditioner or pool pump or electrical infrastructure TOLD you it needed a $80 repair before it just stopped working and needed an $1,800 replacement.
