Whither Hampton Roads?

Guy I know from my junior hockey days played for Chris Nilan with the Chesapeake Icebreakers in the ECHL. He said Nilan would shirt talk any coach he could think he could get an edge on but drew the line at antagonizing Brophy.

Another guy who was on that team told me Nilan was a mess that season, which isn't surprising if you know his history.

Here's a great video of Brophy being Brophy:

Formerly the Jackson (Miss.) Bandits owned, in part, by dearly departed bandit Bernie Ebbers.

This guy told me the same, said Nilan's painkiller intake was otherworldly and that's saying something in the hockey world.

When I was broadcasting in the ECHL, if a guy had a prescription, he generally shared it with the team, especially on the bus... which led to the one time I ever took Ambien. We had just traded for a guy and had a 16-hour bus ride home. Our equipment manager was going to drive the new guy's car back, so I gave him my bunk on the bus until we got to where his car was (it was on the route home). Then I took an Ambien with 12 hours left to go on the road to try and get some sleep.

I woke up the next afternoon in my apartment with no idea how I got there.

I've never taken Ambien again.

A guy who coached with us who played some in the NHL but more in the A, had some stories about popping Ambien on road trips, he talked about it like they were popping Pez. He said some minor league lifers would wash it down with a beer or two and he wondered if they'd wake up at the other end.

I rode the buses for 12 years in the OHL, could never sleep but never took that stuff, I'd read, listen to music, whatever to kill the time.

Sidebar!:
I have never taken any sleeping medication and never will. It scares me.
I've honestly been face-to-face with bears and sharks; I've been shot at and in fires. I've been alone at night in the mountains and in an open boat on the ocean. Nothing Mother Nature has frightens me.
The thought of taking something, going to sleep, and not waking up does. Scares the heck out of me. I had to have an endoscopy a couple of yeas ago, and I literally cried as they were wheeling me back because I was afraid of the anesthesia.

I'm afraid of the pills. I took a Melatonin once, felt like shirt the next day, and never took it again.
Anesthesia doesn't bother me. I've had several colonoscopies and endoscopies. I had a cardiac ablation a couple of weeks ago. I was still in the prep area. The drug guy thought he was a comedian. He pulled something out of the pocket of his lab coat. He laughed and said, "Whoops, why did I bring these?" I couldn't tell what it was, looked like a baggie full of tampons. Then he reached into the other pocket and pulled out 4 viles of magic juice. He came to where my IV was attached and about 2 seconds later, I was out. Woke up a few hours later with no problems.

George Shinn (remember him?) at one point years ago put in a bid for an NHL expansion franchise in the Norfolk area.
Don't recall any specifics. Kinda thinking around the time Columbus and Minnesota joined the league.
