Mayweather vs. McGregor, Aug. 26

I think Laila Ali put it best when she said on ESPN, ""You've got a UFC fighter, who has no boxing experience, fighting one of the best fighters in the world. So if you buy the fight, don't be pissed if it ends too fast or it wasn't competitive. I'm going to be asking, 'What did you expect?' If you think it's going to be a good fight, then you're stupid and you get what you deserve."

One thing that I repeatedly think about for this fight is why it is happening, and the answer I always come back to is money. This ONLY reason this fight is happening to make both sides of it richer than they already are. There is no actual "sport" in it. It isn't happening to see who the better boxer is. We already know that. No serious boxing fans or MMA fans were calling for this fight. There is no actual rivalry between the two. All of that is just a stunt. Mayweather and McGregor are fleecing the public to add zeroes to their bank accounts.

Can you blame them?

Nope. They've done a great job of promoting this and selling it as a competitive fight and overall spectacle. If they can get people to pay $100 for it, good on them.

Not paying, but a local ad agency has a 100-seat theater and I've been invited to a watch party there.

For Mayweather-Pacquiao, by the fourth round, beer pong and poker games were getting more interest than the fight. I suspect this might be the same deal.

Mayweather-Pacquiao was the one dip into the PPV pool for me and boy was that utterly disappointing. Where was Manny's power? Nada.

Mayweather is ultra fast but dullsville. Joshua-Klitschko, now that was a battle on par with Holyfield-Tyson (non-biting); Meldrick Taylor (?) (or was it Whittaker?)-Chavez where Chavez somehow got the rigged vote.

My only regret is not living close enough to Vegas to put my life savings on Mayweather.

And shockingly, the odds are like 3-1 against McGregor, even though they started around 11-1. I don't know how or why that happens.
UFC came about as a means for white guys to see other white guys fighting. UFC's numerous fans are betting on the white guy against the black guy. It's not complicated. It says volumes that the simplest play in the pro wrestling book wasn't used. Mayweather is one of nature's heels. McGregor should've been the face. But UFC fans don't want a face. They're all heels so they want a role model. I'll bet anything that 90 percent of the McGregor money is being put down by Trump voters.

Because UFC bros think there's not much difference in the disciplines. Sucker bets.

Have they really done a good job of that? Do you actually think it will be competitive? Haven't asked all my friends, but there's only one I know who definitely is buying it. He's 24 and is going to have 8-10 guys the same age all throw in some money and get some food and drinks. He told me he thought McGregor could keep it competitive and maybe go the distance because Mayweather doesn't have that much power. When I told him that McGregor will probably not land more than 8-10 clean punches over the first 4 rounds (if it goes that far) he agreed. Not saying I'm definitely right, but when anyone who follows either sport really thinks about it, in a boxing match McGregor will be lucky to hit Mayweather. Not sure how anyone thinks it will be a good fight regardless of what both guys have done to promote it.

I love everything about this post.

(And I hate McGregor.)

Not sure it came about as a means for white guys to see other white guys fighting. Going back to the start of UFC (before it was called UFC) Brazilians who started with jiu-jitsu have dominated the sport.
