2025-26 College basketball coaching carousel

All indications were that UNLV was closing in on hiring Arkansas State's Bryan Hodgson, who previously had been Nate Oats' chief recruiter at Alabama and Buffalo. Instead, he's USF-bound. Fascinating hire at a place that has historically been a hoops graveyard, but where the late Amir Abdur-Rahim showed that one can win quickly and generate significant support and buzz in a large market; the program was attracting sellouts by February of his only season.

Considering that Abdur-Rahim was hired from the A-Sun and Hodgson is coming from the Sun Belt, it seems USF was able to pull from a higher tier than in its last search, which probably reflects how the perception of the job was elevated in just one year. UNLV not being a part of the MWC group headed to the PAC-12 also has to be a factor.

Interesting. Usually being "the hot young coach" requires at least one NCAA appearance to get the fans in the next town excited about the new guy. Hodgson put together a couple of good teams (and much better than A-State had seen lately) but he lost in the Sun Belt finals both years. And the Red Wolves actually underachieved slightly this season, finishing in a four-way tie for first at 13-5 after being the consensus pick to win the league.

But he can recruit and he uses the heck-for-leather Nate Oats system that will sell tickets. My guess is South Florida made a good choice but it isn't a slam dunk.

Crean's time at Georgia was so awful that he may need to take a local parks and rec coaching job if he wants another shot.
