    Obscene Obituary Rates

Rates are all over the board. Our papers charge on average between $150-$250. It depends on length. But I’ve heard neighboring papers charge a heck of a lot more than that, closer to $500-1,000 easily for the same obit.

Nebraska athletics/recruiting reporter, Lincoln Journal Star

IIRC, this is a spot that I was told last year might be opening at this time as they were expecting a couple of retirements on their staff, including the prep reporter position. My family was considering at one time a move up there, and I certainly was looking at this one.

How late is too late to run all area teams?

I would go with the spring teams, but maybe put the winter lists up online. I'm taking over a section -- actually re-taking it as I had it once before -- and plan on getting in the remainder of the spring lists that haven't been published yet. But I wouldn't hold on to them too much longer.

    Denver Post offers buyouts

Damon Cain's office was cleaned out yesterday and the staff was notified last night. Also, there were 22 buyouts announced last week to the staff. Belief is that 3 we're rescinded. One other staffer quit recently as well, who was not eligible for the buyout.

    Denver Post offers buyouts

The Post had two primary prep reporters and a handful of stringers for years. About 2 years ago, they let go of one of those long-time prep reporters and they cut out the stringer/part-time budget for prep folks. Those stringers were brought on as part-timers, in a sense, in 2010-11. Basically...

Sports Writer -- The Murray Ledger & Times (Murray, Ky.)

Congrats, Edward. I had a similar situation happen at the first shop I worked at 17 years ago. There were two of us in sports -- I was the sports editor and we had one reporter. He took a job working for a minor league hockey team. No more than a week or so after he gave his two-week notice, I...
