2025 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

The 2001 MLB rookie class might go down as one of the greatest ever in sports

The one time I saw Sabbathia live was his senior year in high school, when his school opened the playoffs against a local squad. He'd already announced he was taking a ride to Hawaii, but it was generally felt he'd sign. The locals prepped for his fastball all week by taking BP from 40 feet out. So of course, it was his breaking stuff that killed them.

My only time watching Ichiro in person was July 17, 2003 at Kauffman in the middle of a roadie across America.

Saw the sign for Kauffman and got off to see if the Royals were at home, Yes, so I bought a ticket and was thrilled that Ichiro was in town.

He didn't disappoint with 2 hits against Jose Lima who pitched like a king after the Royals had brought back from the dead.

Lima went 6.1 before pulling his groin. He got the win to improve to 6-0.

The Royals had 12 hits by the 6th inning which meant a free dozen donuts for everyone at the game ...

... but I left in the 7th and didn't redeem my ticket for those donuts.

Drove to Independence and stayed at the skankiest motel in town ... think I heard a gunshot ... but I got to see Ichiro bang out 2 of his 3,089 hits.

Also, if memory serves, IJAG had a mad hard-on for Ichiro.

My one Ichiro game was 2002 at the Trop. Maybe $25-$30 for a seat just off home plate and below the press box. Watched him go 2-for-5 and drive in two runs with more than 15,000 of my closest friends, many of whom were Japanese fans clicking camera shutters like lives were at stake. Devil Rays pulled out a rare win in 10 innings.

My dad grew up in Cleveland and was a big Browns and Indians fan. A visit by my parents in 2008 happened to coincide with Cleveland in town to play the Yankees. My brother-in-law and I surprised my dad with tickets. His first and only trip to Yankee Stadium.

My pop loved CC Sabatbia and we lucked out that he pitched for Cleveland that day. Sabathia was in his dominant prime. He tossed a gem but gave up a solo shot and lost 1-0.

Dad was in his mid-60s and I'd never seen him look more like a kid. Having fun with a bit of sense of awe/wonder. Of course, it didn't hurt that we all had a few beers, and he wasn't much of a drinker. He got tipsy and it was a fantastic afternoon.

Sabathia didn't win but we got a great day. Tho, mom seemed a bit miffed when we brought dad to the family dinner at a nice joint when he was half in the bag.

That's my CC Sabathia story and congrats to him. He really seems like a stand-up guy. I thought it was brave and inspiring in 2015 with the Yankees when he went public with his alcohol addiction and said he needed to go to rehab and miss the playoffs. I hope that helped a lot of people.

Happy for Billy Wagner, good southwest Virginia guy. I was covering the game in 2000 in Arizona when he took a comebacker from Kelly Stinnett to the dome. One of the scariest things I've ever seen in person. You could hear a pin drop in that press box.

Mariners fans, I apologize in advance for repeating my favorite Ichiro game. Red Sox in Seattle, 2004. He went 4 for 4 with 4 singles and stole or advanced to second four times. He did not score a run.

Saw Ichiro play a couple of times. Looking it up, he went 1-for-4 in both games. Both were singles.

Also saw Sabathia pitch against Roy Halladay. He had a solid outing (7 IP, 3 ER, 7 Ks). Halladay went six innings, but got hit around.

Probably saw Wagner pitch, but I don't remember when.

What are these mysterious things you speak of?
