Bob Knight slaps player ...

ANOTHER spanking children thread?

Slow news day. This is no big deal at all...

I love how ESPN showed "other examples of bad behavior" by coaches when two football coaches smacked kids in the helmet or grabbed a facemask... Most of us had that happen daily at high school football practice...

Get a grip ESPN...

Gee, people who were beaten as children think it's a good idea.
Color me surprised.
If you're referring to me, I wasn't beaten. I was spanked. I can't help it if you don't know the difference.

I don't know what you received as a child, but for all the hate you spew, I have to believe it wasn't love.

And JR, the perp in this case is EXACTLY why it's not a big deal. That kid went to Tech expecting that kind of stuff. Well, now he got it. Play with fire, etc.

Gee, that's a real testament to personal responsibility. A 60+ man with a history of public sociopathy isn't to blame because a teenager came to him in order to play basketball. When does Knight get to be disciplined in his behavior? When does he take responsibility for his actions?
And if you were spanked, you were beaten.
I'm sorry if the distinction is important to you, but there it is.

Kid doesn't care, kid's parents don't care, AD doesn't care and Knight doesn't care. I don't care.

Interesting attitude. Also interesting disinclination to answer why Knight never has to behave like a rational human being.
Back to the topic at hand.
If Knight got caught paying a kid out of his own pocket, I would argue for leniency because he has no recorded history of that kind of thing. If a couple of players didn't graduate, I wouldn't lump him with, say, HuggyBear because Knight's record on that score has been pretty damn good. In other words, history matters. Which is why Knight simply cannot put his hands on his players any more. Not because other coahces do, but because his history says that it will escalate into something ugly and untoward. He lost his right to do that with impunity about five incidents ago. It's his fault, nobody else's, and it's certainly not the fault of his players.

Ding, ding, ding!

We have a winner!

This just in: ESPN's crew of basketball analysts are declaring this is a nonissue and a nonstory — for the 18th consecutive hour.
Tune throughout the night for more coverage.

Though they kept talking about all halftime.

This is what people are arguing about? I don't have any special affection for Knight, but this? Gimme a freakin' break.

Fenian,
You make a good point, but here's my counter. Texas Tech hired this guy knowing full well about his background and tendencies. Many wanted him to be retained in Indiana, but Myles Brand fired him. Knight didn't meet IU's standards. That was his call and his right. He was hired at Texas Tech with his history well documented, which to me translates tacit acceptance of his behavior (which is often reprehensible, but just as often defensible under certain community standards) by the prez, AD, whoever the heck hired him.

Kids know, or should reasonably be expected to know, exactly what they're getting into when they sign up to play for Knight, just like kids who sign up for the Army know, or at least have means to know, what they're about to get into. Would I send my kid off to play for him? No. Would I object to anyone who would send his kid to play for Knight? Absolutely not.

Well, as much as I think Knight is a dickhead of the first order, Point has a point.

Don't agree with it but I see where he's coming from.

Point's point (geez, this is tough) notwithstanding, no kid should ever be subjected to Knight type bullying.

When I was younger, I got the strap. A parent does that now, and here comes Children's Aid.

And rightfully so. No child deserves to be hit. Period.

I'll take this one step further. I once heard a woman yelling at her 2-year-old to "shut the fork up" and I came very, very close to reporting her to the authorities.
And I will tell you this: For one day, I would give anything to be in the body of one of Knight's players. He swears at me, he lays one finger on me and his ass would be out cold, on the floor faster than you could say "Your scholarship is revoked."
I'd have to look forward to a long career as a rag picker behind a supermarket, but I think it would be worth it.
