Chinese tennis star missing

I remember the anger directed at Carter for boycotting the 1980 Olympics by the athletes. And that was a boycott for invading a whole country. I think Olympic athletes are to self absorbed to want to boycott. I think hat level of self absorption is almost a requirement in order to have the discipline and motivation to be an Olympic athlete.

Right ... or, the mass protest happens in Beijing in that it'll be that much harder for the government to mute the outrage.

If we're going to stop playing sportsball in humanitarian disaster zones (we aren't), there's about to be a helluva lot of events canceled in Qatar and Dubai.

No athlete on earth is giving up a chance to compete at the Olympics because they're being held in a shirtty place.

Biden is planning a diplomatic boycott -- no one from his administration attending, but the athletes go. That seems reasonable.

My guess is that there will be a mass boycott of athletes from all over the world, starting soon. Gonna get ugly for China.

Nah, but it'll be interesting if some athletes do a protest or speak out. China's probably already planning the propaganda blitz if any athlete criticizes them for this.

Thread. Or should these go in the Beijing 2022 thread? Your call, mods.

Here's an article from NYT and ProPublica reporters regarding the Peng Shuai case, and Big Brother-like life in China.

China Unleashed Its Propaganda Machine on Peng Shuai's #MeToo Accusation. Her Story Still Got Out. — ProPublica

It seems pretty comprehensive, and is interesting -- and disturbing...I've followed this story since it began, particularly as I can remember covering a few tennis matches involving her, and even writing a short feature on her at a WTA event, when she was a rising young pro. There was a bit of buzz about her then, too, but it had to do with her potential in the sport. This has been scary and concerning.

I'll go out on a rickety linb and venture that the abuse of women and children in China is worse than what's gone on here x 1000.
