Choke on it, AirTran!

Re: Stay away, AirTran

No, but you can fly over war zones. The pax get nervous and you have a varying chance on getting shot. On the demo version, the war zone is near Oakland; I forgot to disable it and had to baby my turboprop into SFO on a flight from Reno.

You get a separate risk factor for equipment failure (i.e., being shot) and for war taking place on the ground below. Good times.

After the hellish time I had with United over the past two weeks, the impending doom of a great airline like Midwest pisses me off even more.

Tell me about it. I avoid O'Hare at all costs, mostly because of United. Plus, with NWA now having pilot shortages, it could get much worse travel-wise domestically before it gets better.

Re: Stay away, AirTran

O'Hare is permanently off-limits to me as a connecting airport from now on. I would rather drive the hour and have my flight originate from there than get delayed/cancelled like I had happen on my outbound and inbound flights.

forkabuncha United ... Friendly skies my ass.

Gutter - perhaps a question for you if you are in the know:

Who are these shareholders who are tendering their shares and why? I've been following this story relatively closely (something about this story runs almost every other day in our business section). It seems that most people in the area believe that Midwest can be more profitable, and maintain its niche, by staying as is...

I'll jump the gun here and answer...Gutter, feel free to add/correct here.

Basically, a majority of Midwest stock is owned by East Coast hedge and mutual funds. As soon as word of Air Tran's interest in Midwest surfaced, these funds bought up a ton of Midwest stock. In the ensuing months they began asking Midwest to consider Air Tran's proposals, in essence to flip their stock and make money. I believe something like 57% of Midwest's stock is now pledged to Air Tran.

Bottom line? Midwest will likely cease to exist in the next few years. Late word is, however, that Air Tran is now not the only airline in the fray to buy Midwest now that Midwest has basically thrown up its hands and opened the door. Supposedly Southwest and Jet Blue are also interested in buying Midwest.

We shall see, but the bottom line is a sale of Midwest is a huge loss for the airline industry and those (like me) that fly regularly for business. It will take the best domestic carrier (service, comfort, the works) and turn it into yet another bargain-basement, cattle-car carrier.

Could that dipshirt Air Tran CEO be any more long-winded?

Hey Buddy, get forkin' lost already!

Great news for Milwaukee and for those who fly the best airline in the U.S.
