Concerts thread: Best/Worst/Next/Last one you attended?

I can't believe I found footage from that show in Brighton... holy crap, what great memories.

(It shows up if you click the link)

I love finding video of shows I attended. I watched a video of Paul Weller doing "That's Entertainment" a few nights ago. It looked like the show I saw on this tour. At the end of the song the video widened out... and the back of my head was prominently featured. The guy who shot it was standing about two feet behind me.

I wish I could properly express how good Dave Hause was last night in Charlotte. A truly terrific intimate, packed venue at The Evening Muse with tremendous acoustics, and the chemistry between Dave, his brother Tim and Mark Masefield on keys was palpable and came through in the music. Engaged crowd, Dave is brilliant with banter (there was a 7-year-old with his parents on the front row and Dave was great with the kid - "You're going to hear a few words tonight, bud, that you might not want to say in school - yet." - sending him home with a signed setlist and other pickups from the merch area, which Dave and Tim personally worked).

Met three of my friends who didn't know Dave's music before last night and I think they all left as new fans (and spent some money). That was a treat for me.

Fantastic set, good moments throughout, a lot of ups, then bringing things down, and sing-alongs. "Dirty forker" absolutely tore the place down.

Opened with a slower version of "Low," which is a song that brings tears to my eyes, and would have here if it had closed the set. Just a great, great night and worth the 2-hour drive and 2 a.m. bedtime.

Go see Dave. You won't regret it.

Ah, he's playing tonight in Vienna, Va., about two hours from me. Alas, cannot swing that with work tomorrow. Of course, he's closing his UK tour in Brighton on March 2, but I won't get there until March 5 at earliest. That would have been cool.

There wasn't anywhere that felt right to put this, and it probably does not warrant it's own thread. Excellent article on Willie, set at a concert.

Willie Nelson - Stay a Little Longer

That was great, thanks for sharing!

Spring was defined by me missing Turnpike Troubadours due to financial emergency. Now fall has been defined by me missing Morgan Wade due to a different emergency. When I get back on my horse in 2025 I swear I'm finding a way to catch more live music. I want the last year of my 40s to be defined by something more than sports.

Tonight I will be attending "A John Prine Christmas" at a historic downtown Microville theatre that doubles as a performing arts center.

According to the promotional material, it will be a "night of your favorite songs featuring folk troubadour and Prine scholar Jenner Fox, with his all-star band. The evening will weave together Prine's clashic hits, his holiday-themed songs, stories, and lots of singing along. Come prepared to laugh, cry and ho ho ho your way through celebrating a true American original."

Can't wait. Love Prine.

"It was Christmas in prison,
and the food was real good
we had turkey and pistols
carved out of wood."

Somehow managed to hear 14 Hold Steady songs I had never seen live throughout the four-show weekend (and sound check) at Brooklyn Bowl. One hell of a run of great shows. Probably for the best I was stuck on a train for close to seven hours yesterday, allowed me to rest a bit after a great four days in NYC. Also, got to catch up with old SJ board favorite Hoops McCann, who was at the shows.

I've kind of wondered how you avoided burnout seeing the same band over and over. Good to know they keep it fresh.

Part of it is moving around the venues and meeting new people. You do know you're getting a core group of seven songs every night, but those are fun singalong songs that everyone knows. That leaves you 18 spots a night with rotating songs, including super deep cuts. Was fun on Friday night helping someone who was attending her first show figure out when to toss confetti and what not.

You make a good point, though. I've heard that the RHCP, for instance, would play two or three straight nights in the same city with the exact same setlist each night. That would actually suck, and there's no way I'd go if that was the case.

EDIT: To add that it really helps that they hold residencies in interesting cities. London and NYC are worth visits on their own merits. Having the band there just augments the trip.
