Dear dimwit on the phone

Oh, I have gotten calls from people wanting to know about an official's call in a game I never watched, or some boxing-related question, etc. The public seems to think that newspapers (1) know everything about everything, (2) watch every sporting event in the world and (3) have an army of reporters who work 24/7 and are eager to drop everything and fix your latest crisis..... or rescue your cat out of a tree.

The day readers no longer think newspapers have such power ... well, that's the day you should really be worried about.

You make a solid point. If this thread dwindles down...you know our biz is in trouble!

Whew! This was on page 2. I just received a MEDEVAC request to save the thread. Saved another one.

Um, yes, you can send me an "impact notice" on your upcoming road race. I'm not exactly sure what to do with an impact notice.

If it's anything like a press release, then I'll put the information in our events calendar.

Do they really think I'm going to give their release special attention just because they gave it a fancy name?

And to the summer basketball league director who teed off on my intern last night who was just trying to cover one of your games: That will be the last time you see us this summer.

"Impact notice" is corporate/bureaucratic weasel talk for "something really important is about to/has just happened"

BTW, I like your avatar. :)

It's like the people who send in stuff with "urgent" priority. No matter what priority status it gets sent in at, I still won't see it until I get in the office.

And while they're at it, why not try listing stuff like what dates events take place and where? Two announcements got kicked back today for not having that.

I got a press release today, actually, I got it forwarded to me in sports after it went randomly to another writer who does mostly obits.

Anyway, the local junior college wanted us to know that Ryan Lochte once swam in their pool in 2004. 1) Why do I care? 2) If I was to care, shouldn't you have sent this 2-3 weeks ago BEFORE the Olympic swim events were done.

Kind of like saying Kevin Durant walked down the sidewalk in front of my business three months ago, can you profile my shop?

Oh, that poor pool. It's a tad more douchey than it ever would have been before 2004.

Respond with a heartfelt thanks, but say that since Lochte completely crapped the bed in London you'll pash, however if Phelps or Franklin swam there. . . . .

Tell them they can turn it into a tourist destination, a la the George Washington/Abe Lincoln slept here homes.
