Way to keep 'em in line, Eileen!

Hugs are OK if they are one-armed or last less than two seconds at Mesa's Shepherd Junior High School.

A new crackdown on public displays of affection was clarified by principal Eileen Cahoon on Friday after students protested her ban on hugging in the hallways.

...

The principal said the crackdown initiated this week prohibited most physical contact other than shaking hands and “standing very close to each other.” Put simply, she said: “PDA's are not allowed on campus.”

Cahoon said the punishment for public displays of affection can range from a verbal warning to suspension.

I thought for sure this would be how parents who regularly hug their kids are much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much better than those who don't.

We're raising a generation of intellectually incurious, emotionally stunted, pan-fearful dullards barren of creativity.

I certainly could not have said it better myself. Myspace, Facebook, text messaging, no "PDAs" all equates to people eventually not being able to actually communicate with one another.

Disagree. Communication takes many forms, and all of these can be effective modes of communication. I keep in touch with friends from home a lot more than I did before the social networking sites popped up and we all had cell phones. Consequently, there's more communication between us.

It's not face-to-face as often as I'd like, but we live 2,000 miles away from each other. So that's impossible.

On the flip side, I witnessed a girl at a bookstore today actually say to her friend, "LOL". Which is bad enough - generally, a person right in front of you can see you laughing. But she wasn't even laughing. Not a chuckle. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Communicate was the wrong word choice on my part. I should have said "Socialize."
