Ex-reporter fund-raising for rent

I'll go ahead and be the turd in the punchbowl here.

He seems like the kind of guy I'd get along with well. Nice dude, with an eccentric streak I'd appreciate.

But if you're relatively young, able-bodied and educated... and are now on year three of unemployment, it's time to take a good, hard look in the mirror. Losing the "I'm snarky and acerbic" schtick would probably be a really good start.

One side effect of the downsizing at newspapers and other publications is that there are now plenty of freelance opportunities out there. If he had some freelance gigs that are now dried up, he either needs to do a better job or branch out in what he's doing. No one's going to pay you for snarky one-liners about "Slumdog Millionaire."

As someone who's been freelancing for several years, now finding myself in need of "regular, full-time, give me a steady paycheck with benefits" work, I feel for him.

HOWEVER - he wrote himself into such a niche with his movie reviews and "acerbic" attitude I kind of feel as though he did this to himself. I know we're all supposed to find a niche and specialize in that, but there are subtleties to every "niche" and he could have branched out a bit.

And, no, I'm not jealous. I, too, have interviewed celebrities but it's not been about their movies, but their side interests that fit my niche.

I think what got me the most was a statement he made in the article about him in the News Observer - "I've gotten used to things not going well," Lindsey explained.

He goes on and on about how he's such a positive person than says something like this that's rife with "Pity me"?

Sorry... We all go through rough times. He's not a precious snowflake.
