So on top of the layoffs, five papers will get shut down? That's forked up.
Any sigh of relief at those five are only temporary, which can't create a pleasant work environment.

Not completely shut down, but we're talking about letting go of 90+ percent of the staff.
Who will be running the staff? The janitor perhaps?

You can't be serious about this. What about Friday night high school football? Saturday college football?

I don't know... I certainly don't have the answers to what seems like an absolutely ridiculous plan. But it's Gannett, should anything really surprise us?

Good point. The only thing that gives it a shred of credibility is that it's such an amazingly bad idea.

It's a bad idea that will save the company money and in the end, that's all that matters.

Some of those papers are actually making money -- believe it or not.

Gannett actually made 280 million or so last quarter.

So I don't see how this scheme is gonna work.

Believe it or not, some of the readers are going to love it.

People love USA Today.

Based on the number of times mine has been stolen from the front of my hotel room door, I'd have to agree.

Is that why they have to force people to subscribe to it?

I've noticed while strolling through various airports, that people aren't buying papers to read on the plane. And if they do, it's usually USA Today.

One who believes he or she has won a victory over advertising should ask: what brand of coffee do I drink, how did I find out about it and why is it on the shelf of my grocery store?

Eight O'Clock 100% Colombian whole bean, discovered on the shelf of my grocery store because at that place and time it was the only affordable whole-bean coffee in the entire grocery store (as opposed to the well-advertised Starbuck's and Seattle's Best coffees, which cost too damn much). It was founded by A&P in 1919 and was licensed to an outside distributor in the late 1970s. :) Now that I think about it, I don't recall ever in 40+ years seeing an actual advertisement for Eight O'Clock Coffee.

Eight O'Clock came recommended to me by a crazy New Yorker who worked in the press room at my old paper ("you can see the oil still on the beans!") and by my dad, who met my mom at A&P. I haven't taken much of his advice over the years, but I'll give him a check mark for the coffee. And yes, the price is right, though it's not near as cheap as it was a year ago.

Sure, Gannett reported a profit of $285 mill for the second quarter, but they're doing some fancy accounting. Write down is code for LOSS.

From AP: The company announced last month that it plans to take an accounting write-down of $2.5 billion to $3 billion to reflect the company's declining market value. In a press release issued Wednesday, the company said the exact amount has not yet been determined, but narrowed the range slightly, to between $2.6 billion and $2.9 billion.
