Maybe this is of zero interest to anyone here, but I was looking into this for a client, and thought I would pass along the info.

From an ad for The Authors Guild--I have absolutely no connection to this whatsoever, just pasting the text:

The Authors Guild offers book authors and freelance journalists
discounted health insurance plans from Oxford, CIGNA, Harvard Pilgrim,
Tufts and other carriers. Guild health plans are available in New York
State, Massachusetts, California, Connecticut, New Jersey, southern
Florida and Chicago. Guild dental plans from Guardian are available
nationwide.

Authors Guild dues are $90 for the first year and follow a sliding scale
after that based on your writing income (most members continue to pay
$90 per year). Apply for membership.

Health insurance is just one good reason to join the Guild. Join now and
we'll build a customized website for you using the Guild's exclusive
sitebuilder. And our advocacy efforts have helped assure effective
copyright protection, more equitable contracts and free expression since
1912. To learn more about the Guild and its health insurance plans,

Yeah, I'm about to be out of a job. I can COBRA my insurance, but that's such a pain in the ass, and human resources is dragging their feet in getting me the paperwork. But then again, my company has never paid insurance costs for employees. You just get a 10% or so discount for gettting a crummy plan that has no copay and a $1500 a year deductible.

But god forbid if any of these wacko prep sports parents out there shoot you in the knee-cap, you need to have the overpriced shirt.

And we got the best healthcare system in the world!!

Swenk's heart is in the right place, so this is not a dis against her.

However, I looked into the costs and they are abominable. $2,300-plus a month for a family!!!!!!!!!

And costs for a single was something like $600-plus a month and couple/no kids was over $800.

Oh, and those numbers do not include dental or vision. Plus, if you want dental, you're limited to $1,200 a year in work (which would be less than the cost of two crowns) and you have to wait a year before the policy kicks in.

Trust me, you can get a much better deal through places like Humana and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

And for the guy who was going to give up Cobra, don't! Let it ride as long as you can/until it expires.

They probably quoted you higher rates because you're an espn guy!

Interesting to know, though; I was going to ask here whether anyone had checked this out, or had previous experience with this insurance. Like freelance writers don't have enough problems. :-\
