Going rate for freelance articles?

I've looked on LinkedIn — I'm not limiting myself to sports work — and haven't seen much out there. I must not be looking hard enough.

At first I just got ads for the city I am in. But when those started getting traction, I started seeing tons and tons.

I applied to a few through the quick apply feature (super easy, you usually just download your resume and then answer a few questions from the company). There wasn't a lot of risk and I thought, why not. It will tell you if the application got looked at and if the resume was downloaded. That happened more often than not. Maybe that set off their algorithm?

Regardless, there are a bunch out there. I almost get too many a day. There is likely a filter somewhere to get more of what you are looking for.

Also, now that I am doing what I am doing now, I find LinkedIn to be a fascinating tool. Maybe it is the B2B element, but I am on it almost every day. If I wanted something more, I no doubt think it will help me find it through connections, my own work or something else.

If it's steady, repetitive work, you're in a good ballpark. You don't want to over-ask and scare off a golden goose. I do editing work for a couple clients and charge them per hour. Suffice to say, a billed hour doesn't take an hour. But I still don't charge much, because it's a huge amount over the course of a month. And they have referred me out twice, too.

This is basically how I have approached it. It is steady, mostly not stressful and fits my life well. I guess I don't know enough to ask for what some have suggested here, but with the struggles many have to even find paying writing gigs, I don't want to push it too much and not have it at all. It is something to consider as I stick around at the place longer, though.

Just a thought about freelance rates and what to ask for. And how to ask for it.

If you freelance, you're a business. And you have have to run yourself like a business.

Presumably you have a set of skills someone is interested in hiring.

Decide your price - or a range of prices, high and low - and adhere to it.

Be polite, but be firm. Explain why your expertise is worth paying for. If an employer won't pay your rate, pash on the job.

Don't take a job just because it's being offered to you. Stick up for yourself.

In doing so, you stick up for the rest of us.

Because if you don't, we'll all be stuck where we are right now:

Arguing over whether or not the pay rate from 30 years ago is too much to ask for our skilled hard work.
