In January, legendary columnist Sid Hartman had an estate sale that attracted an interesting cross-section of folks (including us).

It's only fitting, then, that legendary former Vikings coach Bud Grant -- his best friend -- is following suit with a massive garage sale this week.

If people didn't buy anything, Grant's signature came at a price.

"Now if you buy my stuff, these autographs are free. But if you just come here to get an autograph, and don't buy anything, then I charge you 25 dollars," Grant said as $20 and $5 bills piled up on the table in front of him.

Grant, an avid outdoorsman, signed a floating fishing chair that Kristen Strain, of Hudson, Wisconsin, bought for her 10-year-old son, Austin, as well as a Vikings drink glass for her 12-year-old daughter, Taylor. Strain said they're originally from Rochester and find it a little strange living as Vikings fans in Packers territory.

"My kids have issues with the green and the gold," Strain said.

It was Grant's 10th garage sale. He billed it as his last. It began Wednesday evening and runs through Friday.

Grant said his goals were simple: Get rid of stuff and make some money.

Oh man, Sid's old-school tape recorder with the actual microphone attached by long cord is the only thing I'd want from that estate sale. Will never forget him carrying it around Vikings training camp and rookies seeing that thing for the first time. One of them told me that Vikings PR had a "Sid Talk" with each of them coming so no one disrespected him.

For my purposes though, as I was usually trying to get longer audio clips for the radio, Sid was the king of stepping in on one. He would appear out of no where, like a small ninja.

Last weekend I happened upon the local access TV show that Sid does weekly with Reusse and a few other Minnesota sports figures, and, with all due respect to a 95-year-old, I really cannot believe they still let him on the air. It's somewhat painful to watch - he can't hear a thing, speaks very slowly and labors over his words, and looks like, well, a confused 95-year-old.

Let's start with this puzzle: Bud Grant is the most measured person I've met in covering sports. Everything about Bud makes sense, except the fact he has no greater friend than Sid.

I'm guessing that Bud has spent eight decades never making a decision that he didn't calculate. Meantime, his pal Sid has conducted himself with the patience of Vlad the Impaler dealing with rivals in the Ottoman Empire.

He also said this about Sid these days:

The Great Man might be throwing mostly changeups rather than fastballs on the hands these days, but he's still getting people out.

Don't take the "Great Man" thing too seriously, it's Reusse's term of endearment for Sid. Sid is Sid.
