Holy cow, I need to lay off the SpoJo

Even when I hopped on the sports journalism train right before Y2K, the peak era had pashed. But if there was a way to go back to the 2000s era of newspapers, I'd sign up for my first shift next week. It's the only job I ever had where I truly felt like I was doing what I was meant to do.

My occupation's just not around

How many threads locked here since
the Great Banhammer Purge of 2018?

Case closed. But their board is up to 17 members
now. So they got that going for them, which is nice.

18th in posts. Ahead of Moddy, even. I'm the Mountain West runner-up, but no longer in "also receiving votes."
Freelancing opportunities drying up, and don't really need the freelance income, but enjoy the challenge of knocking out a good gamer. And dig the camraderie here.

I started here because the sports editor before me had it bookmarked on his computer. (I still need to find and yell at that guy for the years of my life I've lost.) I lurked for years before realizing the big shots in the big jobs were just as dumb as me.

The thing that gets me is talking about covering games and paginating for a daily newspaper in 2006 already sounds like I worked in a blacksmith shop in the old west to my five-year old son.

"And the whole town vaguely knew you, half of them hated you, the other half pretended to like you. People threatened to punch you if their child wasn't printed on the page. There was an incel troll in the basement who called you an hour before your deadline while you were trying to write 15 round-ups about youth sports hounding you to send him a PDF so he could print off pages at 3 a.m. so schoolchildren could hand them out at the crack of dawn to people who paid for the pieces of paper they rarely actually read in any detailed way but cared deeply about. And it all revolved around two-by-three advertisements at the bottom of the page about third-tier restaurants and auto mechanics. And you oversaw numerous strange creatures who would write 500 words and spend their entire weekends stringing for you for $25 because they had nothing better to do with their lives, which you judged until you did the math based on your salary and realized you were being paid less to cover a game that night."

The descriptors of the job sound INSANE 15 years later.

I am proud to be third in likes because it is gratifying to have my witticisms appreciated by smart, witty people. And I feel those likes are earned because they are based solely on what I write and not who I am (or who I am not).

Thank you.

I just want you to know this naked attempt at bolstering your likes worked. :D

All of you are stuck in the past... the most important metric now is Posts-to-Likes ratio (PTL for short). The true measure of a notable member! :D (I'm at 9,166 posts to 10,111 likes. And I had no idea there was a leaderboard here until this thread).
As far as origin stories, mine's boring. Been visiting here since 2003, but really didn't start post much for a very long time. And looking at the leaderboard, I still don't post all that much, but it feels like I do.

forking analytics, even ruining shipposting.
