if my department misses deadline for any reason, time and time and time again, i lose my job, period. i suspect the same is true for you.

if you want to play mr. nice guy, go right ahead.
I think he realizes that. The problem is he hasn't developed a cold heart yet.

I'd lose less sleep over someone else losing a paycheck over losing my own. I'm just wondering who respects this guy, the publisher or editor-in-chief, or people around town.

i have no problem with someone else losing their paycheck than i if they can't do their job. if i can't deal with that, then i'm not doing mine.

And I have no trouble with looking someone in the eye and saying, "If my two options are continuing to miss deadline and ultimately losing my job or consistently making deadlines because I've either held you accountable or replaced you, guess which one I'm going to choose?"

yeah, that and you're not crying like a little girl.

I'm a little confused? Has this guy been missing deadlines for 20 years? If so, how did he get his stories in the paper? Did the deadlines just change and he doesn't know it? Or did they just bend the deadlines for him in the past, meaning they weren't real firm deadlines in the first place.

Well, then, he better get real pretty quick or he'll lose his job while the old guy will continue to blow deadlines.

And, lono, it's far past time to treat this guy with kid gloves. If he can't cover a Friday night game and make deadline the simple solution is don't send him to a game.
If he hasn't succeeded in making deadline for 20 years, nobody is going to create an environment in which he can suceed.
