R-J management was so paranoid about the recent sports editor thread on this posting forum they launched an internal investigation.

That kind of shirt they care about.

Good journalism and concern about their employees aren't such high priorities.

They also don't care much about potential employees either...I got flown out there for a reporting job two years ago...spent a day at the paper (even filed a story). I still haven't heard from them if I got the job or not. Good thing I decided soon after my interview I didn't want to work there.....

Very few good people, especially in sports.

Funny thing is, they have no clue who I am, which goes to show what great journalistic minds are at work. I've actually told a few people who I am. You'd think people who manage a workplace full of reporters could figure out how to track me down.

Not to rehash the previous R-J thread. But I saw a good piece from Matt Youmans this week on the lack of black players in college baseball.

That was a good story. It would have been great if Youmans at least mentioned how much of a racist former UNLV coach Fred Dallimore was. He was the main reason UNLV rarely had a black player on its roster, and sports writers at both papers have done a great job of conveniently ignoring all the totally inappropriate things Dallimore said -- even on the record -- because he's a local legend.

(Added an hour or so after my last post because I couldn't stop thinking about the ol' coach once he got inside my head) The more I thought about it, this was a story on the lack of black college players, so I can see how maybe Dallimore didn't fit in this piece. I guess one could argue a coach's racist attitudes can't be a big factor if there's hardly no one to be prejudiced against ...

But then again, he coached there for decades, going back to a time when there were more black players around the country and yet he still never had any. I think some of those attitudes (there have been a couple high-profile N bombs dropped by college coaches in recent years) contribute to young black kids not choosing to get into baseball because they just don't feel like they belong.

Even if Youmans didn't know Dallimore was a racist (new sports editor Joe Hawk sure knows as a former UNLV SID), the guy is the guru of college baseball in Southern Nevada and should have been an automatic source regardless. And because Dallimore shoots from the lip I would almost guarantee he would have said something to make the story much more interesting ... and probably controversial.

I don't think the RJ's anarch-tarian editorial stance could be applied to anything in its sports section. I can't recall Hawk ever writing, "If the owners of the 51s want a new ballpark, they should be able to pay for it..."

Hear you, but pardon my imprecision . . . when I referred to "editorial", was nodding to the broad editorial content of the RJs
sport section, which has been wholly less than impressive, for decades . . . Graney is a giant step forward.
