Mickelson to boycott Detroit after News article

With the PGA Tour in town, the Detroit News ran a story about how Phil Mickelson was cheated out of $500K several years ago. Well, apparently Lefty wasn't thrilled and will now boycott the Detroit tour stop.

The question for me here: Is Mickelson overreacting or should the News not have ran the story?

Mickelson says he won't play Detroit event again

Unless the tournament somehow is affiliated with the Detroit News or vice versa, sounds like Mickelson is overreacting. It's one thing to be mad at the paper, but he's taking it out on the golf tournament folks who may have nothing to do with what was written.

Let's see ... the event is sponsored by Rocket Mortgage, aka Dan Gilbert. The Detroit News and Free Press offices are in a building owned by ... wait for it ... Dan Gilbert. Wonder if there will be any consequences?

Does Phil brag about his gambling exploits?

Was the bet illegal at the time?

If both answers are "no," then I'm sort of with Phil.
If one of those answers is "yes," then run it and fork him.

Let's see — Phil Mickleson, who never played in the tournament in Detroit before because of all kinds of reasons, says he will never play in the tournament in Detroit again because of this article.

Makes sense.

Hmmm, I was reading about this somewhere else yesterday. Oh yeah, the SJ Golf thread.
