NFL Week 6 -- What could possibly go wrong in 13 seconds?

The Matt Ruhle era proved beyond a doubt what we might call the Sunk Coach Fallacy. It was clear a half season in Ruhle was out of his depth in the NFL, but the Panthers let him hang around rather than eat his contract and only further damaged their franchise. Hackett's obviously even less up to the job than Ruhle, and I don't think Denver owes him $70 million.

Ruhle got a seven-year contract. Hackett signed a four-year deal. And the Walton/Penner group can easily afford whatever amount they owe him.

And this quote from when Hackett was hired has not aged well.

"Nathaniel Hackett is a dynamic leader and coach whose intelligence, innovation and charisma impressed us from the very start of this process," Broncos general manager George Paton said.

I suppose it is bad business to throw around money like it is nothing and get rid of a coach after six games, but it is an even worse investment to get buried forever under it. I just don't see this improving and you already mortgaged the future on Wilson. This isn't college where you have to look under all the cushions to find the buyout money. Get rid of Hackett and find someone who can make Wilson work or even return to form. Hell, at least find someone who can teach the team to not commit more penalty yards than the offense gains.

It's already been seven years of suck for the Broncos and this franchise and its fans, who are spoiled overall and aren't used to it, and you are seriously looking at doubling it with these decisions if you don't figure out how to fix it fast. It's amazing how well the Broncos were run for so long and now this.

The only thing the Browns ever got right was cutting bait with Freddie Kitchens once it was clear he wasn't fit for the job.

More Super Bowl appearances (seven) than losing seasons (five) in 33 years under Bowlen (1984 to 2017). Five consecutive losing seasons since then, heading for six.

They hired Hacket to try and lure Rodgers, neverminding that Hacket wasn't even doing the playcalling in Green Bay. Then again, I thought Daboll might have been the biggest reach of the last coaching cycle. Didn't think much of the Zach Taylor hire either. Rhule really seemed to have a hard time attracting quality ashistants. That, 's a problem with a lot of these young coaches, they haven't been around long enough to develop relationships with a wide circle of ashistants and end up hiring coaches from staffs that were dismissed the previous year.

Unsurprisingly, there have been far more failed NFL HCs than successes. Wonder why?

(In the present day, it's a toss-up whether Parcells would have gotten a second season. Or Chuck Noll. In retrospect, the best thing that happened to the Giants was Rozelle recommending George Young as GM.)

Noll would have gotten at least a second season. Dan Rooney may be gone, but the team still does things his way.
