If ever there is a job where everyone should apply, it's this one... I don't think there is another sports editor in the country who scours the country for candidates... heck, two of his best finds came from Oakland, Michigan (Charles Robinson) and a PM paper in Albuquerque (Rick Maese). Rumor has it, those two have done quite well... ;D

Hoppes is the best talent scout in sports journalism by far...

Nope. Van McKenzie was. I'm sure Lynn would tell you.

I'm a huge McKenzie fan, but I would bet that 90 percent of the Sentinel hires of the last 7-8 years got their first email or phone call from Hoppes...

I'm not sure anyone in our industry would ever want to compare hires with Van. (Maybe Dwyre or Solomon, but the list is very, very short). Van made the paper a destination.
